Randomness: Explaining "A Sea of Thoughts"

Just something small I wanted to share...

In the olden days (2010-2012) I rarely completed a post without composing it in an external word processing program, usually having some form of outline for how I wanted to investigate a topic.

The more recent posts with the title, "A Sea of Thoughts," are a lot more random style of writing which is new to me.  Drifting within an idea until I am inspired to write and then I simply churn it out letting my heart guide things more than conscious thought.  This seems to free me up for more personal reflection but suffers from being less organized and less thorough.  It does also seem to allow for more comment interaction as well.

I guess I'm just kind of curious if people like this style of writing in these posts or not.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

  1. I don't mind the less organized approach. I teach high school English students to "freestyle" write before starting an essay. I find that it helps some people in the writing process. Based on what I have read, I would guess you never struggled much with prewriting stages and could sit down and write a beautiful 500 word essay in your first draft.

    1. Thank you very much for the feedback. I actually didn't write much in college or high school, it wasn't a strong suit of mine so I was "encouraged" to avoid classes that might hurt my GPA.

When I did write it was mostly by making an outline and then filling in the gaps with words, so this is very new to me.

I will keep trying in this style, especially since I probably have already written about most of it in a more formal style years ago :)

  2. Fur, this comment is not exactly a comment on this blog entry of yours, but just a quick note to you that I have returned from vacation and am somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer number of blog entries you have accumulated in the past few weeks. You know I like to comment on what you have written, but you'll have to forgive me if it takes a month or more to digest all of your recent writings, much less comment on them, and if you continue at this pace (and I'm not suggesting that you don't) well, all I can say is that I'll get to them as time allows (to quote the oft used phrase of the much missed QG). So, be patient, please. I'll get there eventually!

    1. Hello, Lady Grey. Welcome back. I hope you had a wonderful time on your vacation.

Please take your time as I did write quite a but. My flames have cooked a touch and I feel like my pace will be slowing down for a bit. Part 27 is a bit of an homage... as will most if not all of Arc 5.

      Take care.

  3. I like the 'letting you thoughts drift' approach to writing ... that is after all how our minds work. Mine certainly doesn't think in tidy sequential 'page-by-page' thoughts ... more random and triggered by events, experiences and thoughts of the moment . So works for me :)

    1. Thank you, mittens. A lot of them do start as an impulse triggered by something I read, think, or wrote in another post. I will keep letting them fly im this way when I get the urge.
